Batch & Furnace Instrument Technician

Primary Function:

The overall objective of the Batch and Furnace Instrument Technician is to ensure the safe, reliable and efficient operation of the Batch and Furnace Department, while championing process discipline and protecting our equipment. The Technician will be responsible for the management and execution of preventive/predictive programs and corrective solutions for instrument and electrical systems and equipment. This person will be expected to work as a team leader and make technical decisions and recommendations.



  • Perform all work in a highly safety-conscious manner.
  • Read and interpret process and instrumentation diagrams, electrical prints, and technical manuals.
  • Troubleshoot and repair electronic/electrical equipment including, but not limited to, programmable controls, gas trains, power supplies, drives, gages and test equipment.
  • Install, start up and shut down equipment in accordance with company safety procedures for machie activation and showdown in line with OSHA and NFPA requirements.
  • Advise and direct operators and line mechanics of operation procedures and requirements for working safely with electrical/electronic and mechanical equipment and components.
  • Perform preventive maintenance functions, as directed.
  • Assist operators and maintenance personnel with technical troubleshooting.
  • Serve as a backup Batch and Furnace Shift Supervisor, covering vacancies as needed.
  • Perform all other duties as required.



  • Associate's Degree from an accredited college in Electrical or Instrumentation Engineering / Technology.
  • 1-2 years of experience in electronic circuitry repair or process instrumentation repair.
  • Proven understanding of regulatory and industrial standards and codes.



  • Knowledge of computer operation and PLC programming are necessary.
  • Knowledge of PC hardware and software; computer literate.
  • Knowledge of repair and calibration of process control instrumentation and microprocessor base controls.
  • Proficient in root cause analysis and familiary with Lean concepts and tools.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Strong teaming and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to remain calm in high pressure situations.
  • Adaptable, flexible, and agile.
  • Possess a thorough knowledge of electrical/electronic components and equipment, including the use of special instruments for diagnostic purposes.
  • Possess leadership skills in order to serve as a backup Shift Supervisor.


Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • Subject to hot, cold, dusty environments.
  • Respirator fit and pulmonary function test required.
  • Safety glasses and hearing protection required.
  • Ability to work at heights on ladders and elevated platforms and to work beneath machines and in close quarters while performing analysis and repair work in a hot environment.
  • Willingness to provide on-call support as needed to support 7-day / 24-hour operation.
